A letter to my 16-year old self!

Dear 16-year old Nadine,

It's me, twice as old as you and hopefully twice as wise!
If I think about my future daughter being just like you, I smile and cringe at the same time. We had some fun times (maybe a little too much fun), but sometimes I wish somebody had given me this advice when I was as innocent (yeah right) and naive as you are.

- Do not ride your bicycle at 3am by yourself through the middle of the woods! Are you crazy? Has nobody ever warned you about rapists and killers? What are you thinking?
Let me just tell you, it won't help you to have a small can of hairspray ready to go in your hands... if someone wants to knock you of your bike, they will! Stop being so cheap and spend your hard-earned money on a taxi or make that loser boyfriend of yours ride home with you. You should count your blessings that nothing has ever happened to you!

- Speaking of loser boyfriends, don't waste another minute crying about that idiot you think you're going to marry some day. Trust me, you won't! Instead of waiting by the phone (and I don't mean cell phone) for him to call, wasting away your entire weekend (spoiler alert - 99 out of 100 times he won't call, even though he told you he would), go out and have some fun with your friends!

- Stop worrying about your weight, you are just perfect! And when your mom starts this crazy diet where all she drinks is baby formula, don't jump on the bandwagon! I still can't believe you did that. Gross!

- Start to pay attention in school! I know, you just met a girl that you will still call your best friend 16 years later, and she is awesome, but you two should start studying together, instead of being kicked out of the classroom. Believe me, you really don't want to become a kindergarten teacher, get your grades up and keep going to school, so you can be whatever you want to be!

- Please, please, please save your grandma some heartache and respect her curfew! When your friends convince you and your cousin to sneak out of your grandma's house at midnight to go back to the party you came from...please say no. Your grandma will come find you at 4am, riding her bicycle, to drag you back home. And it won't be pretty. You owe her a big apology! And while you're on it, please tell your friends not to follow you to throw stones on your window...oh boy!

- Treasure the time you have with your family and friends. You might think now that you will always live close to them, but you won't and you will only see them every other year or so. But don't worry, you will never regret your decision to pursue your dreams in another country, but you will miss them every day.

- Keep up your work ethic! You're doing great!

- Before you move, make sure you get your wisdom teeth pulled! I know, this sounds like the worst advice ever, but seriously, get them taken out now, where you can enjoy Germany's free health care system, because 12 years from now, you will spend two paychecks to get these suckers out. And you won't be too happy about it!

- You think you are so grown up now, but you're just 16 years old! Don't rush your life, don't try to cram everything in this one year!

- Make sure you smile every day. Spend less time worrying about the boys. Dance on the bar tops. Tip back your bottles and just smile. Your life turns out more awesome than you could have ever imagined. Every little thing is going to be alright.

Was denkst du dir?

  3. Hallo,

I found your blog through a comment on the Wiegand Writes blog and have now read back all of 2013 and 2012 just in the last hour or so, I promise I'm not a weirdo ;-)

I myself am German too and worked as an Au Pair on Long Island, NY for two years in 2004-2006, afterwards I moved to the UK where I have been working as a nanny ever since.

I look forward to following your blog from now on, take care
