Going home... or the longest post ever!

Almost three years have passed since I've been to Germany and seen my family and I noticed in the last year that it was time for a visit. Although I love Arizona and think of it as my home, I got homesick and I was looking forward to a visit to my Hometown.
See ya Phoenix!

I traveled for 22 hours, from Phoenix to Toronto, from Totonto to London, until I landed exhausted in the beautiful city of Duesseldorf, which greeted me with grey skies and rain, naturally!
Surreal.

Ich war ZUHAUSE!

It was...unbelieveable. A journey into a different world, a world that seemed so strange all of the sudden, but so familiar at the same time. Like I was just here yesterday, but so far away from the world I live in now. Surreal.

I was HOME!

Goch...die naechst groessere Stadt zu uns.
Goch...the closest City to us

Oh Asperden, wie hab ich dich vermisst!
Oh Asperden, how I've missed you!

It was weird to take a walk through the little village and constantly meet people that you know. You can probably call it a blessing or a curse to live in a 2000 people village, where everybody knows everyone, but I enjoyed it very much to see so many nice people after such a long time again.

Es gab natuerlich viel Familienzeit nachzuholen!

There was a lot of family time to make up for!

And the food? I was in seventh heaven and felt like I've gained ten pounds, judging by the amount of food I've inhaled on a daily basis. It was awesome!
Schnitzel from my favorite restaurant...I went there four times in 11 days!

Wiedersehen mit alten Freunden...
Meeting old friends...

After a few drinks too many they danced on the streets to old german music!

We ended the night in the "Club", our old Meeting point when we were teenagers, where I spent ten years of my youth and met some awesome friends! Since it was so late, there was no one else there and we had the entire club to ourselves, which made the night even more special. It was like we turned back time ten years and I not only had a lot of fun, but also a fat lump in my throat, because I was so emotional.

Was fuer ein Anblick! Ich liebe es!

The fall in Germany was absolutely stunning to me. It's been four years, since I've last seen colored leaves, Arizona doesn't have too much to offer in that department. What a view! I loved it!

One day I spent in Cologne, where I met my California Girls again! From eight girls, we managed to get six of us for a Reunion together, the other two were either still in the US or in Norway and we missed them!

We watched the video we filmed on our Hawaii vacation 3.5 years ago and it was hilarious!

I was so happy to see everyone again! The girls made me a calendar with many pictures of our time together 2007, that I've hung over my desk in my office at work, thank you so much, I love it! See you at the next Cali-Girls Reunion!

Katja also had the mercy to take me onto a Cologne Sightseeing Tour, not that I haven't lived in Cologne myself...hahaha.

We also went to the Hohenzollern Bridge, where we saw thousands and thousand of locks hanging from the bridge. Katja told me that this is a new trend, couples would come to the bridge to hang a locket with their engraved names or initials and throw the keys into the river. I was pretty impressed by the amount of locks.

Schee war's!
It was great!
I just had to squeeze this picture in here...hehe.

The two weeks vacation flew by in a heartbeat and even though I felt like I did everything and saw everyone I wanted to see, it was hard to leave. The feeling to leave this world for at least two years, a world filled with lots of great and crazy family members, awesome friends and a ton of memories wasn't easy, but I also know that my world is here in Arizona now and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Okay, I have to admit, that after twelve days of constant rain, I was so done with the miserable weather that I just needed my Phoenix sunshine back! :)

  1. Isnt' it strange to feel like a tourist in your own hometown? Glad, you enjoyed your time. The food looks YUMMY!

  2. Nadine, I'm so happy you shared your pictures from Germany & had an obviously heartwarming & fabulous time. You are glowing & joyous in all your pictures! We're so glad you're back... but you know we DO have beautiful fall colors here in AZ. It may already be too late this year, but you have to D-R-I-V-E out of Phoenix, either north or south of the Valley of the Sun into some elevation and enjoy what's here, too! : ) And we have some fun Oktoberfest celebrations here, too! Next year, my friend... Enjoy!

August iPhone dump

A few of my favorite moments from August! Meet the teacher for the boys! I received this picture from Katie's wife, such a sweet bond they have. I'm also loving how his pajamas are inside out...haha. Walter came back to spend a few days with us! We watched him last summer, and the boys kept talking about him, so we were all so excited when his mom asked us to watch him for a few days. Notice Finn pouting. He was upset that Walter "only pays attention to Fox". So many big emotions in such a tiny body. Mr. Cool Guy at his dentist check up and teeth cleaning! I was trying to get some work done in my office, but this guy needed some attention. Finn made a bed for them, so they could sleep together. In the end, no one wanted to sleep there, but he was so happy to cuddle with Walter for a bit. My friend got me some comedy tickets to see "Nurse John", so I invited my two besties, and two of my old classmates, and we had a blast, he was so funny. We even got VIP acc...

May iPhone dump

Some of my favorite moments of May that haven't made it on the blog yet. May has been such an incredible month and I wish I could turn back time and do it all over again. Between graduating from nursing school and all the celebrations that came with that, Fox's 10th birthday, Finn's Kindergarten graduation, and all the sweet little moments in between, it was a month I will never forget.  Kindergarten Homework for this cutie, he is very smart, but hates doing it. This was my favorite view at school, right when you exited the building. This was the place where we met up with friends during breaks, and after every exam, and I wanted to take a picture to remember this special place.  Making paper airplanes has been a new favorite for him. This was two days before I took my final exam, and I probably should've been studying, but having an ice cream date with the boys sounded much more fun. He loves to make us laugh. While Finn and I were getting ready for bed, I asked him to...

December iPhone dump

December came and went in a flash! We visited Santa! I started a new job in November as a patient care technician in the Oncology unit at the hospital I'm hoping to get hired by after I graduate. I have heard from many people that this hospital usually hires nurses from within, so I wanted to get my foot in the door, and also gain some more experience before graduating. I was really nervous about handling two 12 hour days per week, on top of school and sharing custody of the kids, and while it hasn't been easy, it has been very rewarding. I love the unit I'm on, the patients, the people I work with, and it's a very humbling experience to work in Oncology.  I took a screen shot of my activity after one of my shifts, I usually average between 7.5-9.5 miles per day, just from walking all over the unit.  The boys are playing bar with their cousin at Grandma's house.  We celebrated their cousin's first birthday! S'mores in the backyard. Nikolaus (a german traditi...
