Bumps in the Road

These past few weeks have been a shit-show at our house. My mom always said that bad things happen in threes, but it seems more like Katie and I both got hit with three things each.

It all started with Zuma’s seizure and the resulting vet bill. Thank God for Care Credit Card. If you don’t have it, you need to get it! It’s a credit card that can only be used for medical bills (vet bills and dental bills included), and you don’t pay any interest for 6-12 months, depending on where you use it. There are no fees whatsoever. It has been a life saver for us so many times already. I always tell Katie that we shouldn’t pay it off too fast, because each time we do, something else happens. :)

Anyway, shortly after, our air conditioner broke. Let me just tell you, when it’s 118 degrees, you need your a/c. Ironically we just had it serviced a month before and even got a new thermostat installed. Luckily, a family friend who owns an a/c company walked us through some things we should try and it has been working since. I’m still waiting for it to break down completely though, it’s getting pretty old!

A few days later I walk into our garage to find that it is completely flooded, because the water heater exploded. The same water heater that was less than 2 years old and was supposed to last for 10 years. Our contractor came out to take a look at the mess and concluded that it broke because we had a salt water system hooked up to it...who would’ve known? Apparently no one, because neither the company who installed the water softener nor our contractor who installed the water heater had ever mentioned it.
Lucky us, it was Saturday and we weren’t able to get a new water heater until Monday afternoon. Lovely.

Next up were the toilets. We noticed that our water bill had tripled in the last month, so when our contractor came back to install the new water heater, we asked him to take a look at the toilets to see if they were the culprits. Turns out, we had three broken toilets in the house that needed to get fixed. Which took three days to repair/replace. I’m not even kidding. Our contractor might always give us a great deal because he is a family friend, but he sure takes his sweet time and complains the entire time he is here. So we not only had to take time off work, we also had to listen to hours of bitching about how ridiculous it was that we used those blue toilet bowl cleaners that stained his hands and how he was going to charge $100 extra for clean up. He seriously was mad. So here we are, one week later with a working water heater and working toilets and still waiting for that bill. I’m scared.

I was pretty convinced that we should be good for now, after all, we already had our “three things” happening. So when I opened our mail and found a $900 bill for a blood test that was supposed to cost $300, I almost lost it. Why have insurance if they don’t cover shit? And the part that upset me the most was the fact that we were forced by a law to conduct this test, even though we already knew the results. We both had to do it and we’re still waiting for my bill, but I can imagine how that one is going to turn out.

So between all of the bumps in the road we had to encounter in the last few weeks, I can honestly say, that if these are the worst things that are happening to us, then we can count ourselves pretty freaking lucky.
Homeownership, Petownership and trying to create a family might be expensive, but we’re blessed to have a home, have these pets and have the funds to continue to pursue our dream of parenthood without going into debt like other families we know had to do.

Life is good.

Was drei ganze Tage dauerte.

  3. I'm sorry Nadine, that's a tough couple of weeks you just had! Hopefully everything really does happen in threes and considering you both just went through several crappy situations, things have to get better! P.S. I love your positive attitude! Keep your heads up. :)

  5. it sounds like you went through such terrible times. Really? The installers and the contractor failed to remind you of the presence of a salt water system on your water heater? This is why it's really important to have honest contractors who will ensure that all information is presented. That way the customer can make wise decisions. I hope all is well with you now.

August iPhone dump

A few of my favorite moments from August! Meet the teacher for the boys! I received this picture from Katie's wife, such a sweet bond they have. I'm also loving how his pajamas are inside out...haha. Walter came back to spend a few days with us! We watched him last summer, and the boys kept talking about him, so we were all so excited when his mom asked us to watch him for a few days. Notice Finn pouting. He was upset that Walter "only pays attention to Fox". So many big emotions in such a tiny body. Mr. Cool Guy at his dentist check up and teeth cleaning! I was trying to get some work done in my office, but this guy needed some attention. Finn made a bed for them, so they could sleep together. In the end, no one wanted to sleep there, but he was so happy to cuddle with Walter for a bit. My friend got me some comedy tickets to see "Nurse John", so I invited my two besties, and two of my old classmates, and we had a blast, he was so funny. We even got VIP acc...

May iPhone dump

Some of my favorite moments of May that haven't made it on the blog yet. May has been such an incredible month and I wish I could turn back time and do it all over again. Between graduating from nursing school and all the celebrations that came with that, Fox's 10th birthday, Finn's Kindergarten graduation, and all the sweet little moments in between, it was a month I will never forget.  Kindergarten Homework for this cutie, he is very smart, but hates doing it. This was my favorite view at school, right when you exited the building. This was the place where we met up with friends during breaks, and after every exam, and I wanted to take a picture to remember this special place.  Making paper airplanes has been a new favorite for him. This was two days before I took my final exam, and I probably should've been studying, but having an ice cream date with the boys sounded much more fun. He loves to make us laugh. While Finn and I were getting ready for bed, I asked him to...

December iPhone dump

December came and went in a flash! We visited Santa! I started a new job in November as a patient care technician in the Oncology unit at the hospital I'm hoping to get hired by after I graduate. I have heard from many people that this hospital usually hires nurses from within, so I wanted to get my foot in the door, and also gain some more experience before graduating. I was really nervous about handling two 12 hour days per week, on top of school and sharing custody of the kids, and while it hasn't been easy, it has been very rewarding. I love the unit I'm on, the patients, the people I work with, and it's a very humbling experience to work in Oncology.  I took a screen shot of my activity after one of my shifts, I usually average between 7.5-9.5 miles per day, just from walking all over the unit.  The boys are playing bar with their cousin at Grandma's house.  We celebrated their cousin's first birthday! S'mores in the backyard. Nikolaus (a german traditi...
