Call me Martha!

Here’s a fact for you that you probably didn’t know about me. I LOVE Martha Stewart. LOVE HER. 
When Katie got Satellite Radio in her car, I begged her for weeks to listen to the Martha Stewart Channel whenever I would ride with her...of course that didn’t fly with her.
I should probably stop right here with my confessions before it’s getting too embarrassing, but in fact, my Amazon wish list has been holding the “Martha Stewart Good Homekeeping Book” for a long time now, let’s see if Santa gets the hint this year!
I wish I could be just like her, but let’s face it, my house will never be clean enough, I have no sense for decorating and Katie calls my cookies “Scooby Snacks”. It’s all good and I like a good challenge!
So last weekend I set out to prove her wrong and that one bad batch of cookies made over four years ago, doesn’t make me the queen of scooby snacks.
I decided to bake some holiday cookies for my co-workers and I totally enjoyed making them, even though I ate way too much cookie dough, to the point that I felt over sugared and nauseous for the next three days. Totally worth it though!

Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:
2 cups flour, plus possibly a few more tbsp
1/2 tsp baking powder 
1/4 tsp salt
2/3 cup unsifted powdered sugar 
1/4 cup granulated sugar 
2 1/2 sticks unsalted butter (cut in chunks) 
1 tsp vanilla 
1/2 tsp of food coloring of your choice (and/or 1/2 tsp of any desired extra extracts) 
1 1/2 cup holiday sprinkles


Hier ist etwas, was ihr wahrscheinlich noch nicht ueber mich wisst. Ich LIEBE Martha Stewart. Liebe sie. 
Als Katie Satelliten Radio in ihrem Auto bekam, hab ich sie wochenlang angebettelt den Martha Stewart Kanal mit mir zu hoeren... natürlich hat sie sich nicht drauf eingelassen!
Ich sollte jetzt vermutlich mit meinen Geständnissen aufhoeren, bevor es zu peinlich fuer mich wird, aber hier ist noch eins ... meine Amazon Wunschliste enthaelt schon seit einer sehr langen Zeit das "Martha Stewart Good Homekeeping Buch", mal sehen, ob Santa in diesem Jahr meinen Hinweis bekommen hat!
Ich wünschte, ich könnte so sein wie sie, aber seien wir mal ehrlich, mein Haus wird nie sauber genug sein, ich habe keinen Sinn fürs dekorieren und Katie nennt meine Plaetzchen "Scooby Snacks". 

Das ist schon alles okay so und ich liebe eine gute Herausforderung!
Letztes Wochenende setzte ich es mir also zum Ziel ihr zu beweisen, dass ein misgelungenes Plaetzchenrezept, was ich vor ueber vier Jahren gemacht habe, mich nicht zur Koenigin der Scooby Snacks machen wuerde.
Ich beschloss, Weihnachtsplaetzchen für meine Kollegen zu backen, was mir total viel Spass machte, waehrenddessen ich viel zu viel Teig ass, bis zu dem Punkt, dass ich mich total ueberzuckert fuehlte und mir fuer die naechsten drei Tage rotzuebel war. Aber das war es mir total wert!

Hier ist das Rezept:

Zutaten:
2 Tassen Mehl
1/2 TL Backpulver
1/4 TL Salz
2/3 Tasse ungesiebter Puderzucker
1/4 Tasse Zucker
300g Butter
1 TL Vanilleextrakt
1/2 TL Lebensmittelfarbe
1 1/2 Tassen bunte Streusel


1. In a stand mixer, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and sugars with paddle on medium until well blended.

2. Add butter in, gradually, and continue mixing. Add in vanilla extract. At this point, your dough will form a ball on your paddle. 

3. Remove all your dough and divide into two equal parts. Return one portion back in to the mixer and add the food coloring and any extra extracts. If you are using liquid food coloring, you will need to add a few tbsp of flour to keep the dough from becoming too wet. Mix until the color is spread out evenly. 

4. Roll out each portions of your dough, between two sheets a wax paper until is reaches about 11 x 9 inches and is 1/4 inch thick. Slide both unto a cookie sheet and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. 

5. When firm, remove the top sheets of wax paper from both. Brush the uncolored vanilla dough lightly with water using a pastry brush. Then flip the colored dough onto the vanilla uncolored dough so they are stacked atop each other and even. Press the edges lightly with your fingertips to seal them together. Using a small pairing knife, trim the edges of the dough to make straight, even lines. 

6. Pour out sprinkles onto a large platter and set aside. Be sure your dough is still cold, but flexible. Once it's ready, begin rolling the long side of dough into a swirl, jelly-roll style. Now, don't get nervous if the outer layer of uncolored dough tears a bit. It's no problem, just pinch and pat those tears and voila, then just keep rolling.

7. Now gently lift your dough log onto the sprinkles and roll away. Cover the log completely with your sprinkles. Wrap the colorfully decorated log in plastic wrap twice. Depending on when you want to bake the cookies, either place the wrapped dough into refrigerator for about 3-4 hours or you can put it the freezer and keep it there for up to 2 months. (If freezing, give yourself time for the dough to defrost in the fridge overnight before cutting.)

8. Slice your dough into 1/4-1/8 inch slices and bake on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 15-17 minutes until edges are slightly golden. Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes, then move them to a cookie rack to finish cooling. 


1. In einem Standmixer das Mehl, Backpulver, Salz und Zucker auf mittlerer Stufe mixen bis alles gut vermischt ist.

2. Butter nach und nach hinzufuegen und weiter vermischen. Vanille-Extrakt hinzufuegen.

3. Den Teig halbieren und einen Teil zurück in den Mixer mit der Lebensmittelfarbe geben. Den Teig mixen, bis die Farbe gleichmaessig verteilt ist.

4. Den Teig (den gefaerbten Teig und den normalen Teig getrennt) zwischen zwei Stuecken Wachspapier ausrollen, bis er ca. 28x23 cm gross und 1/2 cm dick ist. Beide Teile im Kühlschrank für mindestens 2 Stunden kuehlen lassen.

5. Sobald der Teig hart ist, das obere Blatt Wachspapier von beiden Teilen vorsichtig entfernen und den ungefärbten Vanille Teig leicht mit Wasser mit einem Backpinsel bestreichen. Danach den farbigen Teig auf den Vanille Teig legen und die Ränder leicht mit den Fingerspitzen zusammen druecken. Mit einem kleinen Messer die Kanten des Teigs gerade zurecht schneiden.

6. Die Streusel auf eine große Platte schuetten und beiseite stellen. Der Teig sollte immer noch kalt, aber biegsam sein. Die Längsseite des Teigs vorsichtig  zu einer langen Rolle zusammen rollen.

7. Danach die Teigrolle vorsichtig auf die Streusel legen und hin und her rollen, damit alle Seiten der Rolle mit Streusel bedeckt sind. Die Teigrolle zweimal in Plastikfolie einwickeln. Je nachdem, wann ihr die Plätzchen backen wollt, entweder den verpackten Teig für etwa 3-4 Stunden in den Kuehlschrank legen oder in den Gefrierschrank legen, wo man ihn für bis zu 2 Monaten einfrieren kann.

8. Nachdem ihr den Teig in 1/2 cm dicke Scheiben geschnitten habt, auf einem Backblech mit Pergamentpapier bei 180 Grad fuer 15-17 Minuten backen, bis die Kanten leicht goldbraun sind. Die Plaetzchen fuer fuenf Minuten auf dem Backblech abkuehlen lassen.


They turned out pretty good, at least some of my co-workers were feeding them to the office dog eating them and I have been on a sugar high ever since, I just can’t quit eating cookies! 

So I guess I’m not the Queen of Scooby Snacks anymore, but it’s probably also too early to call me Martha...unless you insist of course! :)


Sie sind ganz gut geworden, zumindest einige meiner Kollegen fütterten sie zu unserem Buero Hund assen sie, und ich bin seit Tagen im Zuckerschock... ich kann einfach nicht aufhören Plaetzchen zu essen!
Also ich denke, ich bin nun nicht mehr die Königin von Scooby Snacks, aber es ist wahrscheinlich auch zu früh, um mich Martha zu nennen... es sei denn, ihr besteht drauf! :)

May iPhone dump

Some of my favorite moments of May that haven't made it on the blog yet. May has been such an incredible month and I wish I could turn back time and do it all over again. Between graduating from nursing school and all the celebrations that came with that, Fox's 10th birthday, Finn's Kindergarten graduation, and all the sweet little moments in between, it was a month I will never forget.  Kindergarten Homework for this cutie, he is very smart, but hates doing it. This was my favorite view at school, right when you exited the building. This was the place where we met up with friends during breaks, and after every exam, and I wanted to take a picture to remember this special place.  Making paper airplanes has been a new favorite for him. This was two days before I took my final exam, and I probably should've been studying, but having an ice cream date with the boys sounded much more fun. He loves to make us laugh. December iPhone dump

December came and went in a flash! We visited Santa! I started a new job in November as a patient care technician in the Oncology unit at the hospital I'm hoping to get hired by after I graduate. I have heard from many people that this hospital usually hires nurses from within, so I wanted to get my foot in the door, and also gain some more experience before graduating. I was really nervous about handling two 12 hour days per week, on top of school and sharing custody of the kids, and while it hasn't been easy, it has been very rewarding. I love the unit I'm on, the patients, the people I work with, and it's a very humbling experience to work in Oncology.  I took a screen shot of my activity after one of my shifts, I usually average between 7.5-9.5 miles per day, just from walking all over the unit.  The boys are playing bar with their cousin at Grandma's house.  We celebrated their cousin's first birthday!
