The Dentist' Best Customer!

Also wieder hin.

Also, was tun?

For the last two months, I have been my dentist' best customer. I can't even count on both of my hands how many times I have been there in the last few months and if I have to go again in the next ten years, it's still too early.
It all started with a regular check up. It's not like I never go to the dentist, I've been going to a yearly check up ever since I can remember and usually everything looked great. Unfortunately, this has changed since I moved to the US and the question is, is that because I eat here differently or are all dentists in the US money sucking machines? I totally think it's option number two!
Like I said, I went to a regular check up and naturally they found 101 things that are going wrong in my mouth. The estimate to fix those things was around $1500. Great! So I thought to myself, lets start with the little things and have a filling for $60 done first, because there is no way you can go without a filling and that's basically all the money I had left.
I have no idea what they did in my mouth but only one day later I was going up the walls because I was in so much pain. I wasn't able to eat or drink anything and the pain went from my mouth to my ears and my head. I couldn't take it and thought I'm dying. So I went back to the dentist. Apparently they had hit a nerve and I needed a root canal now, that would cost me another $1500. I didn't even care in that moment, I just wanted to get rid of the pain. What they didn't tell me was the fact that they had to work on me in three sittings for this. The first time they pulled out the nerves, which cost me $200, the second time they finally did the root canal, where I got to pay the number mentioned above and when I went there for the third time they put the crown on.
I thought I was done, because to be perfectly honest I was more than broke and the thought about paying my debt off for the next year or so wasn't that thrilling.
I was ready to run out of the dentist' office when they told me, I also needed to get my wisdom teeth pulled and two additional crowns! Estimate for that: one month salary! Of course they also told me what could happen if I don't do all these little procedures... I get crooked teeth, need more root canals or lose some of my teeth. In that moment I totally lost it, the pain from the last few weeks and the thought about paying off my debt to them for forever, I just balled my eyes out, right there in the dentist chair, no kidding!
I had no idea what to believe anymore, so I went to my old dentist who has treated me since I was 12 years old to get a second opinion, while I was on vacation in Germany. Yes, the wisdom teeth will have to come out, but the rest is total bs and as long as I wasn't in pain, there was no reason to get crowns. Music in my ears, I'm telling you! And the best part was that he did this for free! I have no insurance in Germany and was ready to pay for this check up in cash, but he said, don't worry about it and feel free to come back anytime while you're on vacation in Germany! I was shocked! There is no way that you will find something like this here!
Back in the US I went back to the dentist (AGAIN), where the entire staff knows my name by now, to get my wisdom teeth pulled. That was so not fun, I'm telling you! For the last ten days I've been walking around without any wisdom teeth, but with a HUGE cheek! The Antibiotics they gave me didn't do a thing and after I was standing beside myself for the last six days because a) I was so drugged up by all the pills I ate like m&m's on a regular basis and b) I was still in so much pain even though I took so many pain killers that I was almost unable to go to work or do anything else for that matter. Take a look at the picture above, that is how my cheek looked six(!!!) days after the surgery.
So what did I do? Back to the dentist, where everyone was wondering why my cheek still looked like I was hiding a baseball inside after one week. Well, it turned out that there was a big infection going on in my cheek and I needed stronger antibiotics and also have to squeeze out all the pus every few hours. I know, GROSS!
So now it's ten days later and even though the swelling has gone back, I'm still going up the walls because I'm in pain, still eating up to 15 painkillers plus antibiotics every day and feeling so drugged up that I'm unable to get anything done. Let's see how the next few days turn out, the good news is that I can eat regular food again, but if this doesn't get better soon I might have to go back to my favorite dentist and worry about how much it will be this time.
I'm telling you, as soon as this is over, there is no way I will go see another dentist for the next year and this dentist won't see me ever again anyway. I should probably start saving up again, because they WILL find SOMETHING next time I go, I'm sure of it!

Going home... or the longest post ever!

Almost three years have passed since I've been to Germany and seen my family and I noticed in the last year that it was time for a visit. Although I love Arizona and think of it as my home, I got homesick and I was looking forward to a visit to my Hometown.
See ya Phoenix!

I traveled for 22 hours, from Phoenix to Toronto, from Totonto to London, until I landed exhausted in the beautiful city of Duesseldorf, which greeted me with grey skies and rain, naturally!
Surreal.

Ich war ZUHAUSE!

It was...unbelieveable. A journey into a different world, a world that seemed so strange all of the sudden, but so familiar at the same time. Like I was just here yesterday, but so far away from the world I live in now. Surreal.

I was HOME!

Goch...die naechst groessere Stadt zu uns.
Goch...the closest City to us

Oh Asperden, wie hab ich dich vermisst!
Oh Asperden, how I've missed you!

It was weird to take a walk through the little village and constantly meet people that you know. You can probably call it a blessing or a curse to live in a 2000 people village, where everybody knows everyone, but I enjoyed it very much to see so many nice people after such a long time again.

Es gab natuerlich viel Familienzeit nachzuholen!

There was a lot of family time to make up for!

And the food? I was in seventh heaven and felt like I've gained ten pounds, judging by the amount of food I've inhaled on a daily basis. It was awesome!

Wiedersehen mit alten Freunden...
Meeting old friends...

After a few drinks too many they danced on the streets to old german music!

We ended the night in the "Club", our old Meeting point when we were teenagers, where I spent ten years of my youth and met some awesome friends! Since it was so late, there was no one else there and we had the entire club to ourselves, which made the night even more special. It was like we turned back time ten years and I not only had a lot of fun, but also a fat lump in my throat, because I was so emotional.

Was fuer ein Anblick! Ich liebe es!

The fall in Germany was absolutely stunning to me. It's been four years, since I've last seen colored leaves, Arizona doesn't have too much to offer in that department. What a view! I loved it!

One day I spent in Cologne, where I met my California Girls again! From eight girls, we managed to get six of us for a Reunion together, the other two were either still in the US or in Norway and we missed them!

We watched the video we filmed on our Hawaii vacation 3.5 years ago and it was hilarious!

I was so happy to see everyone again! The girls made me a calendar with many pictures of our time together 2007, that I've hung over my desk in my office at work, thank you so much, I love it! See you at the next Cali-Girls Reunion!

Katja also had the mercy to take me onto a Cologne Sightseeing Tour, not that I haven't lived in Cologne myself...hahaha.

We also went to the Hohenzollern Bridge, where we saw thousands and thousand of locks hanging from the bridge. Katja told me that this is a new trend, couples would come to the bridge to hang a locket with their engraved names or initials and throw the keys into the river. I was pretty impressed by the amount of locks.

Schee war's!
It was great!
I just had to squeeze this picture in here...hehe.

The two weeks vacation flew by in a heartbeat and even though I felt like I did everything and saw everyone I wanted to see, it was hard to leave. The feeling to leave this world for at least two years, a world filled with lots of great and crazy family members, awesome friends and a ton of memories wasn't easy, but I also know that my world is here in Arizona now and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Okay, I have to admit, that after twelve days of constant rain, I was so done with the miserable weather that I just needed my Phoenix sunshine back! :)
